Hailing from the resource-rich southern district of Karak in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ayesha Khattak is a seventh-semester student in the sociology department at Peshawar University. This young lady raised in the lap of rugged mountains has shown such unwavering resolve in the face of extreme adversity that it has turned from a dream into a shining example of determination.

At just 17 years old, after losing her father, Ayesha not only continued her education but also shouldered the full responsibility of supporting her five-member family. Her dream was to become a successful doctor, but poverty and financial hardship stood in her way. Yet, these challenges were never able to diminish her mountainous courage.

Though a lack of resources forced her to set aside her original dreams, Ayesha bravely started working while continuing her studies, so the journey of life could move forward. Concerned about the future of her widowed mother, a younger sister, and two brothers, she faced every challenge with grace and resilience.

“Education is my weapon, and I will never lay down my weapon or give in to adverse circumstances,” says Ayesha.

She also writes in her diary daily, noting her routine and reflections. “Writing a diary helps me analyze my emotions, feelings, and societal behaviors. It strengthens me from within and never lets me lose hope.”

Ayesha spends most of her day at university. In the evenings, she works with an online firm doing forex trading and online typing. She also tutors a neighborhood child, which helps her make ends meet. Her typical day is spent balancing education and work, and managing household responsibilities.

Endowed with iron willpower, Ayesha says she is willing to take on any respectable work that keeps her household running with dignity – but she will never compromise on her education.

After her father’s passing, her mother was devastated. As the eldest sibling, the full burden of supporting the family fell on Ayesha’s shoulders. She says her mother’s silent prayers give her strength. “Those prayers are my strength.”

Ayesha admits that sometimes, the daily grind wears her down to the point of exhaustion, and her resolve begins to falter – but her mother’s prayers and her siblings’ smiles lift her back up.

“My mother’s prayers, my father’s memory and my brothers’ hopes give me courage – and then I get back up, ready to chase my goals with renewed resolve. My mother is a symbol of patience and perseverance for me.”

Ayesha is fully aware of the responsibility she has to shoulder. Through education, she hopes to give her family a life of dignity and become a role model for other girls in society. Her dream is not just to keep the household running, but also to ensure her younger siblings receive higher education.

Ayesha sends a heartfelt message to those parents who, due to poverty, stop their daughters from pursuing education. “Please, let your daughters study. We are not a burden – we can become your strength. We don’t need sympathy, we need opportunities.” Characters like Ayesha are the real strength of our society – those who not only fight their own battles but also inspire others to keep going. Such daughters deserve more than just praise – they should be given the opportunities they truly deserve.
