The shade of nostalgia: Mithakhel Mela under the vanishing Peepal tree
The big old Peepal tree in Mithakhel village in Karak district, KP.
KARAK: In the heart of Karak district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the village of Mithakhel holds a special place in the memories of its residents, thanks to the ancient peepal tree that has been a witness to generations.
Standing proudly on the edge of a rainy watercourse, this majestic tree has long been the centerpiece of the weekly fair known as the Peepal Mela.

For many, including myself, the Peepal Mela is a journey back in time, reminiscent of childhood days spent in the vibrant atmosphere of this traditional market. Every Tuesday, the village comes alive with the hustle and bustle of people from surrounding areas, all converging under the thick shade of the Peepal tree to partake in this weekly event.

However, as time marches on, the once grand peepal tree has lost its former glory. Its branches, once a sprawling canopy of shade, have been denuded, leaving the weekly fair under a desolate ambiance. Despite the changes, the Peepal Mela continues to be a vital hub where locals gather to purchase essential items for the week ahead, from groceries to vegetables to livestock.
The Peepal Mela is not merely a marketplace; it’s a cultural symbol, weaving together the threads of tradition and community. The dwindling shade of the old peepal tree echoes the passage of time and serves as a poignant reminder of the changes that have swept through Mithakhel.
As we walk through the market stalls, memories of laughter, shared stories, the taste of the Pulaw and Halwa, Jaleebi, Chai and Pakoray, tikka, the beans and other local cuisines, and the vibrant colors of the fair held on the stony and sandy watercourse come flooding back.

The sense of nostalgia is palpable, a bittersweet blend of joy for the cherished memories and sorrow for the fading grandeur of the Peepal tree. In the face of these changes, the resilience of the Peepal Mela stands out. It continues to be a vital part of the community’s life, linking the past with the present. While the old Peepal tree may have lost its shade, the spirit of the Mela endures, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of cultural heritage. – By Em Eye
