IHC orders release of Imran Khan in Toshakhana case, but arrest shown in cipher case
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s sentence in the Toshakhana case on Tuesday and ordered his release.
A division bench of the IHC, comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangir announced the reserved verdict.
On Monday, Amjad Pervaiz, the counsel for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the defendant in this case, had concluded his arguments and the court reserved the verdict.
Meanwhile, a petition has been submitted on behalf of the PTI chief by his lawyer Suleman Safdar, praying to the court to restrain the Federal Investigation Agency, National Accountability Bureau and the police from arresting him in any other case.
In the meantime, a special court has written to the Attock jail superintendent to keep Imran Khan in the judicial lockup and produce before this court on August 30 (Wednesday).
The special court has been established to prosecute cases under the Official Secrets Act, 2023.
It is pertinent to mention here that the trial court had announced a three-year jail term along with Rs100,000 fine to the PTI Chief in the Toshakhana criminal case on August 5. Imran Khan was shifted to Attock Jail after being arrested soon after the verdict was announced. – our reporter and news agencies contributed to this report
