Independents clinch majority of seats in KP LG by-elections

PESHAWAR: Independent candidates clinched a majority of the seats in the by-election of local governments held in 65 village and neighbourhood councils of 21 districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday.

According to unofficial results of 38 seats, so far, 16 independent candidates won their seats, following Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf with nine seats and Jamaat-i-Islami with five seats.

Three seats have been won by JUI (F) candidates, while two seats have been clinched by the Tehreek-i-Insaf Parliamentarians and Awami National Party.

In Swat, out of three seats, one was clinched by JUI (F) candidate, one independent and one PTI.

In Haripur, an independent won the only seat up for grabs.

In Charsadda, three of the five seats were won by Jamaat-i-Islami, one JUI (F) and one independent candidate.

In Mardan, out of in nine seats, three seats were grabbed by PTI candidates, one independent and one Awami National Party.

Among the six seats of Peshawar, three seats went to PTI, one independent, one Awami National Party and one JUI (F).

According to the results of two seats in Khyber, independent candidates were declared successful.

In Kohat, independent candidates clinched three out of five seats, according to the unofficial result.

In Dera Ismail, out of five seats of total seven vacant seats, four seats went to independents and one to Tehreek-i-Labaik.

In Upper Dir district, two out of four seats went to Tehreek-i-Insaf and two to Jamaat-i-Islami.

Independent candidates won one seat each in Bajaur and Malakand. Pervaiz Khattak’s party PTI-P won two seats in Nowshera. – Our correspondents and news agencies contributed to this report
