Commitment to learning – a powerful tool for social change

Amidst the din of life’s struggles in the busy streets of Peshawar lives a determined young soul named Ranraa (name changed). At the tender age of twelve, she possesses a spirit that shines brighter than the challenges she faces. Ranraa, who goes by only one name, has a dream, and she’s fiercely committed to turning it into reality.

Ranraa’s life is far from ordinary. She is the second last child among nine siblings, four of them being boys. Her family’s financial situation is far from stable, as her father sells plastic sheets on the streets of Peshawar, while her elder brothers do odd jobs to make ends meet.

Living in abject poverty, Ranraa’s father and brothers struggle daily to find sufficient means to make a living. In the absence of a permanent source of income, the family has been badly exposed to the harsh realities of life. Her siblings have not received any formal education.  

Receiving education for a girl in Ranraa’s position or even thinking about going to the school is more than a luxury that many girls can only dream of, but she is different. She cherishes a desire to change the course of her family’s life through education. However, this dream was nearly shattered when one of her brothers forcibly took her out of school, citing financial constraints and exchanging heated words with a schoolteacher.

Despite the familial and financial pressures, Ranraa refuses to give up on her dreams. With unwavering determination, she has found a way to navigate the difficulties that life throws at her way. In her immediate neighborhood, a kind-hearted woman has taken Ranraa under her wing. This angelic neighbor has stepped in to teach Ranraa in the evenings, ensuring that she like her own daughters continues to get education privately.

Ranraa’s commitment to learning serves as a beacon of hope in her community. If it weren’t for the family pressures and financial constraints, she believes she could perform even better in her studies, all while contributing to her family’s financial well-being. In Ranraa’s life, we find the embodiment of the human spirit’s indomitable will to overcome difficulties. She is a testament to the idea that education can be a powerful tool for change, not just for oneself but for an entire family as well as the society. As she continues her journey, Ranraa and her teacher, a proverbial Good Samaritan lady, both serve as an inspiration to us all, reminding us that dreams are worth pursuing, no matter the obstacles that stand in our way.
