ISLAMABAD: Soon after taking oath as the 8th caretaker prime minister of Pakistan, Anwaarul Haq Kakar assumed his responsibilities. The caretaker PM sought a briefing from all ministries on important matters.

Anwaarul Haq Kakar became the 8th interim prime minister of Pakistan after taking oath of the office at a ceremony held at the Aiwan-i-Sadr in Islamabad on Monday.

Anwaarul Haq Kakar was administered the oath by President Dr Arif Alvi.

Kakar was named as the interim premier on Saturday, following a constitutional process of consultations between outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and outgoing Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Raja Riaz to nominate a consensus candidate for the coveted slot.

In a statement, the outgoing PM had expressed confidence that Kakar would ensure fair and free elections. He said the “trust reposed by all parties in Kakar’s name proves their proper choice as the upcoming caretaker PM is an educated person and a patriot”.

A day earlier, the PM-designate had announced his resignation from the Senate as well as the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), which he had founded in 2018.

A notification issued by the Senate Secretariat on Monday notified Kakar’s resignation.

The notification reads: “The honourable Senate chairman has been pleased to accept the resignation and consequently his seat has become vacant in terms of clause (1) of Article 64 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan with effect from August 14.”

Anwaarul Haq Kakar hails from Qilla Saifullah, Balochistan, and he was one of the architects of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP). He was elected to the Senate as an independent candidate in 2018. Earlier, Mir Hazar Khoso from Balochistan had become the interim premier in 2013. – our reporter and news agencies
